Are you looking for a social ride? New to road riding? Want something a bit more advanced? Our group rides offer you a variety of rides from the purely social and family ride to the advanced “hammerfest” road ride. See our Group Ride page for details, including schedule!
Not sure which ride is for you? We broke it down based on type of rider. But there are many overlaps, so come give them all a try!
You: Love exploring new parts of your city, like mid-ride snacks
Ride: Urban Wilderness
This is a social-paced 17-mile ride, perfect for someone who can do a full morning’s worth of riding. We leave from our Brookland shop and try to stay in the trees. We head down the Met Brach Trail to the National Arboretum through Kingman Island and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. We pause for pretzels & lemonade at Eastern Market (snacks!) to re-energize before circling back to the shop. One Saturday a month, 10 a.m. at Brookland shop.
You: Considering longer rides, want to explore outside of DC
Ride: Lake Artemesia Loop
This is an 18-mile ride heading north toward the scenic Lake Artemesia on the Northwest Branch Trail. If you’ve never explored the bike trails beyond the District, this is a great introduction. We’ll circle the lake and stop at our midpoint for a coffee/snack break in College Park. One Saturday a month, 10 a.m. at Brookland shop.
You: Are not a morning person, like bumpy trails and fires
Ride: Campfire Grind
This is our only non-morning ride, and for good reason! This 25-35 mile round-trip gravel ride will progressively pick up rides from our Brookland and Q St shop, and head to the Capital Crescent trail entrance in Georgetown. You can meet us at any of those three spots. We’ll midpoint at the Marsden Tract Campsite with a campfire (BYORoastables) and get you back to DC by 11 p.m. One Saturday a month, 5 p.m. at Brookland shop; 5:30 p.m. at Q St shop, 6 p.m. at the Capital Crescent entrance.
You: Want to ride with family or kids
Ride: Treetime Ramble
This 7.8-mile family-friendly ride will leave from our Brookland shop and head to the National Arboretum. We’ll explore the Met Branch Trail, beautiful botanical gardens and Capitol Columns by bike and foot before pausing for a snack stop on the green. One Saturday a month, 10 a.m. at Brookland shop.
You: Have a road bike, want to ride for exercise and with a group
Ride: Introductory Road Ride
This is a great ride for the cyclist who is new to road riding and wants to improve skill level and road riding techniques. This is a no-drop ride meaning that the ride leader stops along the route to keep the group intact. The course is about 30 miles and primarily flat. You must have a road bike for this ride. The ride leaders are experienced road riders and are happy to answer any questions and help you become a better cyclist!
You: Ride lots and ride fast, did the intro ride but want to go faster
Ride: Intermediate/Advanced Road Ride
The original Bike Rack group ride now in its 10th year! This is the ride that has helped to create new group rides, cycling and multisport teams, friendships, even marriages. This ride assumes that each rider has group ride experience, paceline experience and can handle an average pace of 16 to 18 mph for 40 miles. This ride leaves in at least two groups, an advanced “fast paced” group and a “moderately paced” group.
From our first stop in Potomac Village, the ride often breaks up into a variety of distances (50 to 100+), a fast-paced 40-mile and the regular moderately paced, no drop 40-mile ride back to the starting point at our Q Street location. You will often find many of us grabbing food from someplace nearby as a way to finish off a great ride.
You: Are Chris Froome, or come to the Sunday Advanced regularly
Ride: Fast 40
This is an offshoot of our Sunday Intermediate/Advanced Ride and meets two hours before the Sunday ride at 6:30 a.m. The route is the reverse of the Sunday shop ride. It is a no stop” and “will drop” fast paced hammerfest designed for advanced road riders. Participation is dependent on your performance as a road rider and is by invitation only from our Sunday ride leader.
Check out the schedule and join us in April for a ride!
