What are your favorite ways to stay warm on a bike in the winter? Here are a few of our favorite tips from the shop for staying cozy on your wheels in the cold:
1. Wear gloves! Your hands will freeze if you try to bike without gloves in cold, even cool, temperatures.
2. Layers, layers, layers. Make sure you can pull a layer off if you get too hot, or put another thin layer on if it feels too cold. For folks that kit up for their commute, a nice base layer (long or short sleeve) under your jersey (with a windproof jacket on top) and a nice pair of long leg tights will keep a lot of the cold out and the warmth in. This along with gloves, a hat, and some booties for your toes will have you riding through the winter months.
3. Head gear. A lot of heat is lost through the head. A nice wool cap under your helmet will keep your head warm. Covering your ears will also help keep you warm. Hats with ear flaps or balaclavas will do the trick in cold weather.
4. Neoprene or thermal booties. Bike shoes typically have a lot of good ventilation but it is not what you want when riding on a sub 40 degree day. Cold feet will definitely ruin your ride. Keep your toes and feet warm with booties and enjoy your winter ride.
